NHS National Services Scotland (NSS)

National networks are an integral part of a systematic approach to service redesign and improvement, designed to deliver Scottish Government policy aims of improved outcomes for patients, families and carers through effective integration. In an important strategic development, Scottish Government directed National Services Scotland (NSS) to design and implement a National Network Management Service (NNMS); thereby consolidating structures with the aim of improving the quality and consistency of support. There is evidence that when admin support is ineffective the lead clinician spends a disproportionate amount of time carrying out or checking basic admin work and this detracts form the purpose of their role. Network lead clinicians agreed with this need, telling us, “Networks should be clinically led to address priority issues and NNMS should provide organisational support to enable this.”
