Due to staff changes, it is anticipated that this award will next be delivered in 2023.

This blended learning programme will utilise a range of different methods to support your learning and progression. All webinars will be delivered via an online platform and you will be provided with guidance and support to enable you to access teaching sessions and complete assessments online and electronically.  Therefore you will require access to a laptop or computer that has a webcam facility and broadband internet access.

Course Structure

The duration of  the Programme is approximately 12 months and is part-time.  Candidates should already be working in a dental practice in a managerial or supervisory position and will need the support of their employers whilst undertaking this programme. 

There are five units of study, all supported by a webinar, tutorial, learner guide and assessment workbook.  To gain the overall award, candidates must gain a pass result in all the assessment workbooks.   The units of study are as follows:

Dental Practice Manager
  • Managing in a Dental Environment: Outcome 1 - Policy and Legislation
  • Managing in a Dental Environment: Outcome 2 - Human Resource Management
  • Managing in a Dental Environment: Outcome 3 - Financial Management
  • Managing Health and Safety in a Dental Environment
  • Developing a Customer Focussed Organisation 
  • Presentation Skills for Dental Managers

The awarding body for this programme is SQA and the course is level 8 on the SCQF framework.


The current course fees are £145.  This includes all webinars, tutorials and the final assessment.   

In addition, SQA charges a fee of £13 per unit (5 in total) for verification and certification purposes.   

Fees are payable upon commencement of the programme and are payable to NES.
